Discover the Unique Terroir of Awatere Valley: The Heart of Our Sauvignon Blanc
Read moreOur Tohu Whenua wines are a gift from the land, the place where we stand.
From our tūrangawaewae in Te Tauihu, the top end of the South Island of New Zealand, we present our Tohu Whenua collection. Each wine is an expression of the distinct contours and complexities from special corners of our standing place - Whenua Matua vineyard drenched in the sun on the slopes of the Moutere Hills of Nelson, and Whenua Awa perched high on the remote terraces of Upper Awatere Valley, Marlborough.
In te reo Māori, Rewa means to float and elevate, just like the bubbles in our wine.
Méthode Traditionnelle by its very nature lifts the mood of any gathering, calling us to celebrate the here and now. Our inspiration comes from the Rewarewa tree and its meaning. In spring the trees are covered in scented blooms irresistible to tui and bellbirds who flock to them to drink their nectar. When Rewarewa are full of birds they literally sing with joy. A wonder you can only ever experience here in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Daring to be different, our Blanc de Blanc and Rosé are deliberately dry in style. They give a serious nod to Champagne with a decisive New Zealand twist. Bready, brioche notes mingle with the iridescent traits of Marlborough
Creating wines that are elegantly bold, edge and irresistible.

The Power of Place
Our Single Vineyard Collection celebrates He Whenua. He Kura. The power of place.
From Whenua Awa in Marlborough’s Upper Awatere Valley, where wind, river and mountain shape the land, we craft three distinct wines — Marewa, Matangi, and One.
Together they tell a story of connection and reciprocity, of people and place, the harmony between nature and human effort — guided by care and time. This is the power of place.
Whatungarongaro te tangata toitū te whenua.
As people disappear from sight, the land remains.
Marewa
SAUVIGNON BLANC, WHENUA AWA VINEYARD
Marewa means to rise or lift up. It reflects the positioning of our Whenua Awa Vineyard elevated above the braided Awatere River and the cool, lifted character of this place fresh and bright.
Matangi
CHARDONNAY, WHENUA AWA VINEYARD
Matangi is wind. Our Whenua Awa Vineyard is shaped by the Awatere winds, Matangi carries the calm strength that comes from working in rhythm with the elements — resilient, elegant and balanced.
One
PINOT NOIR, WHENUA AWA VINEYARD
One means earth or soil — the foundation of life. Formed from soils carried down from mount Tapuae-o-Uenuku, One reveals the depth and balance of our Whenua Awa vineyard, the strength of the land and
our enduring connection with it as tangata whenua – people of the land.
Upper Awatere Valley, Marlborough
Whenua Awa Vineyard
Our Whenua Awa Vineyard sits 230 metres above sea level on remote terraces in Marlborough’s Upper Awatere Valley, the most south-eastern sub-region and closest to the sea. Shaped by the braided Awatere River and framed by Tapuae-o-Uenuku and the Kaikōura ranges, this cool, dry and wind-influenced site encourages long, slow ripening and concentrated flavour.
Whenua Awa, meaning River Land, reflects the relationship between river and whenua. Across three elevated terraces of fertile loams over ancient riverbed stones, these conditions create an ideal environment for expressive Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with precision and vitality.
